A daily (or weekly) business blog can greatly improve the effectiveness of your websites marketing benefits. A blog can be extremely beneficial to successfully attracting new customers and improving your search rankings.
Here are some of the ways a business blog can help your website reach a greater audience:
- When you have a business blog you are creating valuable content that people can find helpful, and potentially share or subscribe to. Which will do two things: help you gain traffic and also keep subscribers engaged. So, when you post regularly, you are helping to create return traffic, and ultimately more leads. Every time a new visitor reads one of your blog and finds it useful they remember your company and it is a positive mental signal. In fact, marketers that post regular blogs report seeing 67% more leads then marketers that do not regularly post a blog. And companies that blog earn nearly double the backlinks of companies that don’t.
- Businesses that have a blog on their site are proven to almost double their backlinks.
- Post more than just a couple of blogs a month. It is a proven fact that businesses that post 16 or more blogs in a month get 3 times more traffic to their site than businesses that post 0 to 4 blogs in a month.
I know, 16 posts a month sounds like a lot, especially when you’re trying to run a business in addition to your regular daily activities. Don’t worry. A lot of business owners find it hard to come up with 16 new topics every month to write about. However, it is worth the time and effort. The more blogs you post, the more your businesses website will benefit. If you struggle with this, our blog management service can help you.
Just because you should be publishing about 16 blogs per month doesn’t mean you have to have an overly creative mind to come with new and exciting topics. Here are some useful tips to help you steadily create interesting topics for your blog.
Learn more about your competitors
Businesses have been creating blogs for the better part of 20 years now. So, no matter what type of business blog you have, there is most likely a business just like yours that already has a successful blog. Google businesses just like yours and read some of their blogs. Take notes of what seems to work for them and what doesn’t. Here are some key notes to write down when doing your research:
- What categories do they post about more frequently?
Some websites may have a list of different blog categories that are featured on their site. Pay attention to the categories with the most posts. If they are posting a lot of blogs based on one particular category, it’s probably because people seem generally more interested in those kinds of posts.
- What topics get people to interact more?
Pay close attention to blog posts that have a lot of comments or shares. Blog posts that encourage conversation and shares leads to more readers, which creates more leads. If certain topics appeal to readers that visit a website similar to yours, the same topics may help you come up with some share worthy posts of your own. You don’t have to be 100% unique, remember Google wasn’t the first search engine. But they did do it better and thus, dominated every search engine.
- What kind of features do their blogs have?
Take important note of any videos, images, or features that their blogs may have. Blog features may include downloadable offers, email subscriptions to their blog, and anything else that may be helping them with a successful blog. After you have done some research on your competition, you can pick a couple of topics and/or features that you think may be beneficial to your blog as well. Use what you have learned as food for thought to think up some of your own unique blogging ideas. You should never just copy someones content, but you can learn from it.
- What could have made their blog better?
Think about what you think they didn’t do that could have made their blog even better, and put those things in your own blog. Maybe you were surprised that a certain topic wasn’t talked about. Write about it in your own blog. And maybe you followed one of their how to guides, and couldn’t figure out a step? WORK to figure it out then explain it to your readers in a more understandable way.
- Pay attention to the blog post that didn’t seem to get their readers attention
When you were reading some of your competitor’s blogs, did you come across some blogs that were poorly written, or poorly researched? If you come across a blog post and you think it could have been done better, do it yourself. Write a similar post and make it what you think it should have been.
- Do you think their posts left certain things unsaid?
If you think a competitors blog posts left too much to the imagination, and they don’t explain enough about the topic. Write about it yourself and include all the details you think may have been overlooked.
Learning how to effectively brainstorm and mind map
After you have researched what seems to be working for other people with similar goals, you will need to start using your own brain to apply those techniques to your own unique ideas.
There are two techniques that may help you effectively generate some ideas of your own. These two techniques are called, brainstorming and mind mapping, I go into depth about these below.
Everyone has done some sort of brainstorming in their life at one point or another, whether it was in a class or a business meeting. When using the “brainstorm method”, a group of people will usually put rough ideas on a wall to come up with a list of multiple ideas that may be effective to your business or cause. One important thing to remember when brainstorming is, no idea is a bad idea.
You can set a specific amount of time (about 10 or 15 minutes) and write down every single idea that pops into your head. Whether it’s a really big idea, or a really small idea, make sure you write it down. You’re probably going to come up with a couple of silly ideas at first, but that is actually a good thing. You want your mind to relax and be loose, so you can entertain creative and unique ideas. Don’t worry, you may laugh a few times, but eventually something great will make it onto that wall.
- Mind Mapping
This technique helps you create unique ideas that are based around one particular topic. For example, if you run a store that is focused around children, you can come up with one topic, (such as potty training), and use that one topic to come up with a plethora of related subjects that you can write posts about. So, you can write potty training in the middle of a piece of paper, and write relating post ideas that you come up with around your central topic. It’s a more organized way of brainstorming. It may take you some time, but eventually you will come up with some topics that are sure to catch your readers’ attention.
Use a specific blog post format to generate new ideas
Even the best of writers draw a blank when they stare at a blank piece of paper, or a blank screen. Knowing where to start can sometimes be daunting. So instead of going into a state of panic staring at a blank page, you can stare at a blog post that is already formatted. It may help you think up some creative post ideas.
A list post is one of the most common forms of a blog post. A list post has up to 100 thoughts on one particular topic, and they come in various forms, such as:
- The Top List
The best way to explain the top list is to give you an example. If you’re running a daycareor something involving small children, you can do a post entitled “Top 10 tips to potty training your child” or “Top 5 mistakes parents make when potty training” etc. You can even do something cute like “Top cutest toddler pictures on the internet”.
- The Helpful Suggestions List
This helps you generate creative post ideas such as, “5 ways to help your child get a head start before pre-school”, or “10 ways to help you and your baby sleep through the night”.
- The Historical List
You can write a post about how much parenting and/or potty training (if that’s what you’re in the business of) has changed throughout the years to give your readers a bit of a history lesson.
- The Mega List
The mega list is exactly what it sounds like. It is one list filled with a bunch of ideas that you have thought of while brainstorming. An example title of a post like this would be, “50 fun activities to do with your child”.
Formatting allows you to have a general idea that you can use with a variety of different topics. It allows your creativity to thrive, and unique ideas to flow into your mind. Although the list formatting is quite helpful, they are not your only options. Here are some ideas that may help you with your blog.
- How-to posts
- Specific case studies
- A roundup of different tweets about one particular subject
- Surveys and/or polls
- News coverage on a topic relating to your business
- Problems that may arise and solutions that may be used to fix them
- Inspirational blogs relating to your business
- Frequently asked questions (FAQS)
- Definitions of terms relating to your business that people often misunderstand
- Coverage of an event that relates to your business or products in some way
- Checklists and/or “cheat sheets” that may help someone in a field relating to your business
- Dedicate a blog post to answering any questions your readers may have[/checklist]
Use the Keywords to create new blog post topics
Most SEO agents will give you some ideas for keywords that will help your search rankings. Keywords are an important part of your search rank because it is what people will generally type into a search bar to look for businesses or websites like yours. Using these keywords to brainstorm or mind map can often lead to a lot of great blogging topics.
Capture Ideas on the Go
Unfortunately, some of our best ideas come to us unexpected. Then they seem to escape our brain when we have a pen and paper to write the idea down. Start carrying a pen and a small notepad with you at all times. You can even use a Smartphone. If you have a place to jot down ideas all the time, no good idea will be left out. You should also have some sort of notepad on your computer that you can quickly get to as well. That way if something comes to you as you are surfing the web, you can write it down.
You don’t have to be a professional writer to blog
The most important thing is to never give up. Just because you aren’t a talented writer, doesn’t mean you can’t have a successful blog. If writing isn’t your strong point, try beefing your blog up with some images or videos. You can still add text, but you won’t have to worry about the whole thing being written content. You can also hire someone to write the content for you, if worse comes to worse. In today’s society, blogging is vital to having a successful online portal to your business. So it’s important to keep your blogs consistent, and never give up on it.
