Take notes of what seems to work for them and what doesn’t. Here are some key notes to write down when doing your research:

  • What categories do they post about more frequently?

Some websites may have a list of different blog categories that are featured on their site. Pay attention to the categories with the most posts. If they are posting a lot of blogs based on one particular category, it’s probably because people seem generally more interested in those kinds of posts.

  • What topics get people to interact more?

Pay close attention to blog posts that have a lot of comments or shares. Blog posts that encourage conversation and shares leads to more readers, which creates more leads. If certain topics appeal to readers that visit a website similar to yours, the same topics may help you come up with some share worthy posts of your own. You don’t have to be 100% unique, remember Google wasn’t the first search engine. But they did do it better and thus, dominated every search engine.

  • What kind of features do their blogs have?

Take important note of any videos, images, or features that their blogs may have. After you have researched what seems to be working for other people with similar goals, you will need to start using your own brain to apply those techniques to your own unique ideas.

There are two techniques that may help you effectively generate some ideas of your own. These two techniques are called, brainstorming and mind mapping, I go into depth about these below.

 

 

  • Brainstorming

Everyone has done some sort of brainstorming in their life at one point or another, whether it was in a class or a business meeting. When using the “brainstorm method”, a group of people will usually put rough ideas on a wall to come up with a list of multiple ideas that may be effective to your business or cause. One important thing to remember when brainstorming is, no idea is a bad idea.

You can set a specific amount of time (about 10 or 15 minutes) and write down every single idea that pops into your head. Whether it’s a really big idea, or a really small idea, make sure you write it down. You’re probably going to come up with a couple of silly ideas at first, but that is actually a good thing. You want your mind to relax and be loose, so you can entertain creative and unique ideas.  Don’t worry, you may laugh a few times, but eventually something great will make it onto that wall.

  • Mind Mapping

This technique helps you create unique ideas that are based around one particular topic. For example, if you run a store that is focused around children, you can come up with one topic, (such as potty training), and use that one topic to come up with a plethora of related subjects that you can write posts about. So, you can write potty training in the middle of a piece of paper, and write relating post ideas that you come up with around your central topic. It’s a more organized way of brainstorming. It may take you some time, but eventually you will come up with some topics that are sure to catch your readers’ attention.

Use a specific blog post format to generate new ideas

Even the best of writers draw a blank when they stare at a blank piece of paper, or a blank screen. Knowing where to start can sometimes be daunting. So instead of going into a state of panic staring at a blank page, you can stare at a blog post that is already formatted. It may help you think up some creative post ideas.

A list post is one of the most common forms of a blog post.  A list post has up to 100 thoughts on one particular topic, and they come in various forms, such as:

  • The Top List                               

The best way to explain the top list is to give you an example. If you’re running a daycareor something involving small children, you can do a post entitled “Top 10 tips to potty training your child” or “Top 5 mistakes parents make when potty training” etc. You can even do something cute like “Top cutest toddler pictures on the internet”.

  • The Helpful Suggestions List

This helps you generate creative post ideas such as, “5 ways to help your child get a head start before pre-school”, or “10 ways to help you and your baby sleep through the night”.

  • The Historical List

You can write a post about how much parenting and/or potty training (if that’s what you’re in the business of) has changed throughout the years to give your readers a bit of a history lesson.

  • The Mega List

The mega list is exactly what it sounds like. It is one list filled with a bunch of ideas that you have thought of while brainstorming. An example title of a post like this would be, “50 fun activities to do with your child”.

Formatting allows you to have a general idea that you can use with a variety of different topics. It allows your creativity to thrive, and unique ideas to flow into your mind.
